AS Roma have parted ways with head coach Daniele de Rossi just four games into the new Serie A campaign. De Rossi, who took over from Jose Mourinho in January, has struggled to deliver results, with Roma yet to secure a win in the league this season.
After a string of three draws and a disappointing home defeat to Empoli, the club finds itself in 16th place following a 1-1 draw against Genoa on Sunday.
In an official statement, Roma explained: “The club’s decision is taken in the interest of the team, to be able to promptly resume the desired path at a time when the season is still at its beginning.
To Daniele, who will always be at home in the Giallorossi club, a heartfelt thanks for the work carried out in these months with passion and dedication.”
Daniele de Rossi’s stint at Roma began on a high note, with the club losing just one of his first 11 Serie A matches. During that impressive run, Roma accumulated 26 out of a possible 33 points, catapulting them from ninth to fifth in the standings.
De Rossi also guided Roma to the Europa League semi-finals, where they were narrowly eliminated by German champions Bayer Leverkusen. Despite a sixth-place league finish, Roma secured a spot in this season’s Europa League.
Over the summer, Roma bolstered their squad by signing La Liga’s top scorer, Artem Dovbyk, from Girona, and veteran German defender Mats Hummels on a free transfer. One of their marquee European fixtures this season includes a trip to Tottenham Hotspur on November 28.
Roma have seen several key players depart recently. Former Manchester United defender Chris Smalling moved to Saudi Pro League club Al-Fayha, while striker Tammy Abraham joined AC Milan on loan. Romelu Lukaku, who spent last season on loan at Roma from Chelsea, has now signed with Napoli.
Other notable exits include Andrea Belotti, who has joined Como, Rui Patricio’s move to Atalanta, and Leonardo Spinazzola’s transfer to Napoli.
De Rossi, now 41, enjoyed a legendary playing career at Roma, where he spent 22 years and made 616 appearances before retiring in 2019. He was also a key member of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad.
Roma is majority-owned by The Friedkin Group, which holds a 95.97% stake in the club. The group, led by Dan Friedkin, was also involved in a proposed takeover of Everton earlier this year, though the deal fell through in July.
