The National Democratic Congress decided to stage a protest in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) unwillingness to carry out a forensic examination to determine the credibility of the voter registration before to the elections in December, and the EC’s deputy commissioner of operations has condemned this decision. Protests, according to Samuel Tetteh, won’t result in a legitimate voter registration. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, September 12, he clarified that the NDC had been requested by the EC on several occasions to submit data regarding the alleged disparities, but the party had not done so.
The NDC has been voicing worries about several anomalies in the voter registration for a few weeks now. On September 17, the party announced a nationwide protest against the EC because it would not accept an independent audit of the registration. The EC acknowledged that some of its district officers had unlawfully transferred ballots without following the law, which sparked stronger protests. The Commission claims to have rectified the problem and punished the offending officers.
On September 17, Johnson, the National Chairman of the NDC, declared a nationwide protest against the EC for not agreeing to carry out a forensic audit of the register. John Dramani, the party’s presidential candidate, has echoed the appeal and urged supporters to turn out in large numbers to the EC headquarters to participate in the demonstration.
However, the EC notes that rather than using protests to settle disputes, the NDC should have talks. It further states that protests will simply “cause tensions and suspicions that are unwarranted.” He gave the party his word that the EC would look into any discrepancies that were brought to his attention and prove that the issues had been fixed. The NDC flagbearer, former president John Mahama, was also urged by the Electoral Commission to meet with the party to discuss a transparent process.
