The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserts that digitisation is essential to fighting corruption in Ghana, pointing to the Ghana card’s substantial influence on public sector wages. He claims that the implementation of the Ghana card has given 18 million adult Ghanaians a distinct identity, made it possible to identify and remove pensioners and ghost workers, and resulted in significant financial savings for the nation.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, August 25, 2024, Dr. Bawumia said he was confident in the ability of digitalisation to combat corruption and that it had assisted in resolving long-standing problems. He cited the SSNIT’s identification and removal of 29,000 ghost pensioners, which resulted in savings of GH¢400 million, and the National Service Secretariat’s discovery of 44,000 ghost service employees, which resulted in savings of over GH¢350 million.
The NPP flagbearer announced a major victory in the battle against corruption, pointing out that digitalisation made it possible to remove all fake personnel from the Controller and Accountant General’s payroll. “Digitalisation holds the key to dealing with corruption. When I look at the impact of the Ghana card on the public sector payroll, it gives me a lot of confidence that we are on the right path to deal with corruption ex-anti. The Ghana card provides a unique identity that by fingerprint for every adult Ghanaian so far, we’ve issued 18 million Ghana cards so far.”
