Djokovic has called for more ‘clear protocols’ concerning the issue of tennis doping

Djokovic has called for more ‘clear protocols’ and ‘standardized approaches’ concerning the issue of tennis doping as seen with Sinner. The world number one, Sinner, violated anti-doping rules back in March after he returned two positive tests for clostebol, a compound that contains steroids used for building muscle mass. The tribunal though last week absolved Sinner of any wrongdoing or negligence after the ITIA determined that the Italian player was accidentally carrying the prohibited substance due to contamination by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.

Naldi had applied to an itch on his right hand an over the counter bacterial spray which trainer Umberto Ferrara had given to him prior to treating Sinner. In that case, Sinner ended up in contact with this prohibited substance, even if not intentionally. Subsequently, the 23-year-old sterile player, who has since parted ways with both Naldi and Ferrara, was first under a provisional suspension after testing positive. However, this suspension was appealed and he was free to compete, as many others this year too. It is true that there is a push for consistency as Djokovic has suggested that there needs to be more standardization of dealing with doping cases in the sport.

Some players have suggested Sinner received special treatment and, speaking before the US Open, world number two Djokovic said: “I understand the frustration of the players is there because of a lack of consistency.

Several players, including Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, Britain’s Liam Broady, and Canada’s Denis Shapovalov have taken to social media to express outrage over the decision to clear Jannik Sinner of sanctions after he tested positive to a banned substance. Sinner the holder of the Australian Open title will be primed to start as the number one seed in the US Open. The event is the last one of the four major tennis championships to be played in the year and begins this Monday. Nevertheless, Sinner has not lost sight of his next games regardless of the ongoing debate over his case.
