Donald Trump has clinched victory in the U.S. election, marking a historic return to the White House.
Addressing enthusiastic supporters in Florida, Trump declared, “America has given us an extraordinary and powerful mandate.”
In a decisive win, Trump secured four of the critical swing states: North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. He also holds leads in Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona.
Kamala Harris has yet to acknowledge the outcome or speak to her supporters, as disappointed attendees began leaving her watch party even before the final results were announced.
In addition to Trump’s win, Republicans regained control of the Senate by flipping several key seats, further consolidating their power in Washington.
With the latest key projection from Wisconsin, along with results from Alaska, Donald Trump has now secured 279 electoral college votes.
For those unfamiliar with the U.S. electoral system, each state and territory runs its own election and then sends electors to cast their votes in the Electoral College, with the number of electors roughly proportional to each state’s population.
Across the 50 states and Washington D.C., there are 538 electoral votes in total, and a candidate needs at least 270 votes to win.
Kamala Harris, by contrast, has garnered 223 electoral votes, having recently won New Hampshire, adding four more votes to her tally.
