Dr. Randy Abbey -I am not aware of anything with GBC

According to the member of the Executive Council of the GFA, Dr. Randy Abbey, there has been no discussion with GBC for the Ghana Premier League broadcasting rights. Earlier, the state-owned broadcaster showed interest in the acquisition of these rights but the deal was awarded to StarTimes in 2019.

The Chinese television network had been holding the rights to broadcast both the GPL and the MTN FA Cup, but the contract expired at the end of the 2023/24 season. Interviewing Dr. Abbey on Joy sports he was pleased to inform that the GFA is currently negotiating with StarTimes to extend on their contract.

He also explained that though GBC has not been given the television rights they have applied to have the radio right to cover the matches. This is according to Adriano Gory who has also stated September 6 as the date for the commencement of the 2024/25 Ghana premier league season. Dr. Abbey said this following rumors that GBC had been awarded the TV rights.

“I am not aware of anything with GBC. The only thing I am aware of is GBC writing to the GFA requesting for rights to run radio commentary…,”

“They [StarTimes] are yet to honour, so the contract is ended and there are outstanding issues from the previous one. We’ve been engaging,”
