In the event that he is elected president, Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that, if approved, the much criticised electronic charge (E-charge) on mobile transactions will be eliminated by March 2025. He highlighted that one of the main tenets of his plan to propel Ghana’s growth and give young people job opportunities would be digitisation. The government implemented the E-levy in May 2022 in an effort to raise additional funds for national government initiatives.
Last week, during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Election 2024 manifesto launch in Takoradi, Dr. Bawumia declared he would eliminate the e-levy if elected. Many people, even his political rivals, have criticised his statement. However, Dr. Bawumiainformed reporters at Kempinski that the contentious tax will be eliminated after he assumes presidential duties in 2019. He also promised that his administration will give early, bold decisions the highest priority in order to boost economic expansion and generate jobs.
