For the forthcoming 2024 General Elections, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has advised media outlets not to declare election results in front of the Electoral Commission (EC). This warning was given on Tuesday in Accra during the opening of Citi FM and Channel One TV’s coverage of the 2024 general elections. Maintaining the electoral process’s credibility and integrity is vital, as CODEO underlined.
CODEO’s National Coordinator, Albert Arhin, made the observation that voters may get confused and uneasy if media outlets made announcements too soon. He emphasised that CODEO does not make any statements in accordance with protocol, even though it may have access to information prior to the formal declaration.
Arhin emphasised the media’s crucial role in the democratic process but emphasised that they must hold off on disclosing any information until after the EC releases its official results. He restated that the public’s confidence in the electoral system might be damaged by any departure from the protocol, which only the EC is authorised to announce as official election results.
