Residents of Agona East District lament decades-long struggle without electricity

People of the Kofi Abam, Okotokwa, Kwame Ntiful and five other villages in the Agona East District of Ghana have had little or no access to electrical power for many years which has affected their activities in a very ways. School going children have been affected by the absence of electricity since they have no proper source of light when congested and required to study at night.

Apart from abject education, lack of power has been a hindrance to economic development and most business men and women cannot carry on with their businesses since there is no source of power such as electricity. People are limited to the use of candles and lanterns as sources of light which has compounded their economic plight and increases feelings of insecurity since many people believe that it is dangerous at night.

While some of the communities have previously been wired with electricity connections, they are still out of the national grid contrary to neighboring regions that are privileged to power. In interviews with Channel One News, local Assembly members using frustration saying that the situation is critical stressing that government has been making promises for many times.

The current MP of Agona East, Queenstar Mame Pokuah Sawyerr has lamented her inability to see these communities get connected to the grid due to the current administration’s actions. although she has successfully electrified 48 other communities, she has been constantly appealing to Ministry of Energy but has not found any solution for these eight communities.
