Christian Eriksen played a pivotal yet mixed role for Manchester United in their Europa League opener, as Erik ten Hag’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Twente, the manager’s boyhood club.
Eriksen gave United the lead in the first half with a well-taken goal from inside the penalty area. However, his moment of brilliance was later overshadowed when he lost possession near his own box, allowing Twente’s Sam Lammers to pounce and fire a stunning strike past goalkeeper Andre Onana, leveling the score.
United pushed hard for a winner, with Joshua Zirkzee’s close-range shot brilliantly saved by Twente’s Lars Unnerstall, who had earlier made an incredible stop to prevent an own goal by Mees Hilgers. Captain Bruno Fernandes nearly added a second, and Kobbie Mainoo had a late penalty shout waved away by the referee.
After a disappointing Champions League campaign last season, this draw was not the ideal start for United in Europe. With a tough away fixture against Porto looming on 3 October, Ten Hag’s men will need to regroup quickly. Still, the team remains unbeaten in four matches, despite drawing their last two.
