According to his representative, US rapper Fatman Scoop passed away on Friday night in Connecticut at the age of 53 after passing away after a show. He fell to the ground on stage in Town Centre Park in the city of Hamden midway through his performance. The rapper was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance, according to a Facebook post by Mayor Lauren Garrett.
Fatman Scoop’s booking agency, MN2S, however, informed the BBC in a statement that the New Yorker’s “legacy will live on through his timeless music” after confirming his passing. Scoop is recognised for having had a significant impact on the 1990s hip hop scene in New York City.
He has appeared on well-known songs like Mariah Carey’s It’s Like That and Missy Elliott’s Lose Control, which won a Grammy. Scoop is also well-known for his sleeper hit Be Faithful, which peaked at the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK in 2003 after being rereleased in 1999 and gaining international recognition.
The rapper had an appearance in the 2004 episode of Channel 4’s UK TV series Chancers, which starred musicians coaching up-and-coming British musicians hoping to make it big in the US. In 2015, Fatman Scoop participated in Celebrity Big Brother 16: UK vs. USA, a UK-hosted competition show. His expulsion was the third housemate’s to occur.
DJ Pure Cold, his tour manager, posted on Instagram, saying he was “lost for words” after learning of his friend’s passing. “You showed me the globe, taking me to some of the biggest and most prestigious stages on the planet to perform with you. I genuinely am the man I am today because of the lessons you taught me. On September 7, Fatman Scoop was scheduled to play at the Reminisce Festival in the UK. The festival described the news of his passing as “devastating” in an Instagram post.
