Ghana to tackle Female Genital Mutilation with new Inclusive Data Initiative

Ghana’s endeavours to address Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are expected to experience a noteworthy acceleration with the introduction of a novel data-driven initiative designed to enhance the precision and comprehensiveness of information regarding the practice. The Ghana Stakeholder Consultation on FGM in Accra today covered the initiative, which focusses on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.3.2—measuring the proportion of girls and women aged 15-49 who have undergone FGM.

In his introductory remarks, Godwin Odei Gyebi, the acting director of the Ghana Statistical Service’s Demography Directorate, emphasised the significance of the effort. In order to guarantee that underprivileged people are not disregarded while formulating policies, he underlined the importance of inclusive data methods. The project, part of a broader global initiative led by the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD) and APC-Colombia, aims to fill critical data gaps through the use of citizen data, particularly in selected districts in northern Ghana where FGM remains prevalent.

The project which will span 2024 and 2025, began with a high-level kick-off at the United Nations Statistical Commission in February, followed by national consultations, training sessions, and the development of specific use cases. By 2025, the project will implement these use cases, share progress through peer exchanges, and culminate with the publication of the Inclusive Data Playbook, which will include case studies and training content.

Ms. Kelis Moreno, Counsellor of Foreign Affairs of the Colombian Embassy in Ghana, expressed her happiness that Colombia was a partner in the initiative. In Ghana’s continuous efforts to end FGM, the project is a significant step forward towards the ultimate objective of influencing future legislation and guaranteeing that every girl and woman in the nation is safe from this damaging practice.
