The Police have rejected allegations of using force during the Democracy Hub demonstration last weekend, despite reports of provocations. Following incidents of violence at the protest, authorities confirmed the arrest of 54 individuals, all of whom have been brought before the court in accordance with legal procedures. The prosecution is being handled by the Office of the Attorney-General.
In response to claims that a 12-year-old child, a 68-year-old woman, and a pregnant woman were among those detained, the Police stated that they provided food for the child at the station. For the child’s wellbeing, her guardian, Grace Asantewaa, was granted police inquiry bail and allowed to take her home.
Regarding the alleged pregnant woman, Gloria Vera Louise, the Police clarified that there was no visible evidence of her pregnancy at the time of arrest. To uphold transparency and maintain high ethical standards, the Police Administration has directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the detention of two suspects who were held in custody beyond the 48-hour limit without being presented in court. Disciplinary action will be taken if necessary.
