Concerns have been expressed by the Ghana Water Company (GWCL) regarding the persistent illegal mining activities in the Pra River that are seriously interfering with their business operations. The water supply in Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding areas has been severely impacted, according to the Company’s Central Region management, leaving the locals in terrible shape. The once-dependable water flow has been cut off, leaving customers in these locations to deal with an increasingly dire scenario as the taps have been dry for days.
The region’s water security is under threat due to illicit mining, which is compromising the Company’s capacity to supply clean, readily available water. The Ghana Water Company claims that insufficient raw water received at the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant (WTP) as a result of galamsey is the cause of the recent Demand-Supply gap. According to the Water Company, the Pra River’s pollution along its whole course, particularly at the abstraction catchment, has hardly affected the water embankment.
The corporation also states that illegal mining (galamsey) has lowered the quality of raw water, resulting in around 60% of the catchment capacity becoming silted. Customers and consumers alike have experienced severe inconvenience as a result of this scenario. The business is currently actively interacting with all parties involved in an effort to resolve the problem in a long-term manner.
Thus, the Water Company is requesting everyone’s aid in order to help restore the raw water’s quality and guarantee a consistent supply of clean drinking water, particularly as they kick off the Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebration, which is attended by the chiefs and people of Cape Coast.
