Mobile Money Group Issues Ultimatum to Government Over Galamsey Crisis, Threatens Nationwide Strike

The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has delivered a stern warning to the government, highlighting the devastating impact of illegal mining, or “galamsey,” on the environment. MOMAG raised their concerns during the “I Stand Against Galamsey” campaign on Channel One TV, which aired on Monday, September 16. The campaign aims to amplify the voices of groups and organizations calling for an end to illegal mining.

MOMAG accused the government of failing to take decisive action and warned that, if the issue is not addressed by the end of September, their members across the country will suspend operations in protest against the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.

Kingsley Amoako Atta, National Secretary of MOMAG, stressed the potential consequences of such a strike, urging the government to take swift and effective steps to resolve the crisis. MOMAG has also issued a list of demands, including:

  1. Declaring a state of emergency over all water bodies;
  2. Cancelling all mining leases that encroach on water bodies;
  3. Enforcing mining laws and regulations; and
  4. Providing alternative livelihoods for those engaged in illegal mining.

The group insists that immediate action is needed to protect Ghana’s natural resources from further degradation.
