The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has voted overwhelmingly to join Organised Labour’s upcoming industrial action against illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. In a vote held on October 8, 355 out of 443 members (80.14%) supported the motion to join the strike, while 88 members (19.6%) opposed it.
Organised Labour, which comprises various unions, has resolved to proceed with a nationwide strike on October 10, despite President Akufo-Addo’s request for more time to address their concerns during a meeting on October 4. The spokesperson for Organised Labour, Joshua Ansah, reiterated the determination to strike, emphasizing that the government’s proposed measures do not adequately meet their demands.
