Sheila Minka-Premo, Board Chair of the Eve International Foundation, has praised the passage of the historic Gender Equity Act 2024, calling it a major victory in the fight for gender equality in Ghana.
Speaking at the 2024 Eve International Foundation Women’s Conference on Thursday, which was themed “Gender Equality: Transforming Women’s Leadership for National Development and Beyond,” Minka-Premo applauded the efforts of the Affirmative Action Bill Coalition for their persistent advocacy that culminated in the landmark legislative achievement.
Reflecting on the two-year journey of the Foundation, she commended the collective work of various stakeholders that contributed to the milestone and urged continued advocacy for the implementation of the Gender Equity Act.
United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Charles Abani, also underscored the importance of women’s inclusion in national development. He emphasized that Ghana cannot achieve its ambitious goals without fully integrating women into leadership roles.
He also pointed out that Ghana’s goal of becoming a WISER (Wealthy, Inclusive, Sustainable, Environmentally Aware, Resilient) country will not be realized unless women are fully included in the process. Abani highlighted that only 14% of Ghana’s parliamentarians are women, calling it a significant barrier to progress.
The Eve International Foundation Women’s Conference, an annual event aimed at empowering women and driving social change, brought together women leaders, policymakers, and advocates to discuss strategies for achieving gender equality and transforming women’s leadership for national development.
