The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has extended a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking a major disappointment for the nation’s football fans.
The apology followed an Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, where the GFA reflected on the team’s shortcomings. In a statement released shortly after, the GFA acknowledged the pain caused by the team’s underperformance, stating:

“We share in the immense disappointment and frustration of our cherished supporters and understand the high expectations placed on the team. We deeply regret that we were unable to meet these expectations and extend our sincerest apologies for the heartbreak this has caused.
“We also wish to express our profound gratitude to our loyal fans for their unwavering support throughout the qualifiers. Your passion remains our greatest inspiration, even in these challenging times.”*
The Black Stars, historically one of Africa’s footballing giants and four-time AFCON champions, fell short in the qualifying campaign for the first time since 2002. They finished last in Group F, which included Niger, Sudan, and Angola, ending a 21-year streak of consecutive appearances at the tournament.
This failure follows years of disappointing results, including back-to-back group stage eliminations in the last two AFCON tournaments, leading to growing frustration among fans.
In its statement, the GFA pledged to make improvements, acknowledging that the team’s current form does not reflect the standards Ghanaians expect and deserve.
To address the crisis, the association has scheduled a stakeholders’ retreat on November 28. The meeting will bring together key figures in Ghanaian football to assess the situation and develop a strategic roadmap for the future.
The GFA emphasized its commitment to restoring the glory of Ghanaian football, vowing to take the necessary steps to rebuild the Black Stars and regain the trust of the nation.
