Ghana and China resolve to developing cooperation as the new Chinese ambassador calls on the Lands Minister.

On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, His Excellency Tong Defa, the newly appointed Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, paid a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor. The meeting marked the ambassador’s official introduction as China’s highest representative in Ghana, setting the stage for discussions on strengthening the long-standing ties between the two nations.

During the visit, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to responsible and sustainable management of Ghana’s mineral resources—a sector in which China plays a major role. Ambassador Tong Defa expressed China’s readiness to continue partnering with Ghana in this crucial area.

Samuel A. Jinapor warmly welcomed the ambassador, acknowledging China as a steadfast partner in Ghana’s development since independence. He emphasized that China’s contributions to various sectors, particularly large-scale mining, have been essential to the country’s growth. The Minister noted, “The relationship between our two countries has been strong and beneficial. China’s involvement in the mining sector, especially with projects like Shandong Gold in the Upper East and the upcoming Cardinal Namdini project, demonstrates this collaboration.”

He further mentioned plans for a new airport in Bolgatanga, initiated by Chinese investors, as an example of the ongoing projects that would have a significant impact on Ghana’s infrastructure development. He assured the ambassador that Ghana would continue to work with Chinese companies, ensuring their operations comply with national laws and environmental standards.

Ambassador Tong Defa, on his part, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and acknowledged the historical ties between Ghana and China, which span multiple sectors. He pledged to build upon the work of his predecessors and enhance cooperation, particularly in the mining sector. The ambassador emphasized his commitment to deepening bilateral relations, ensuring mutual benefits for both countries.

The meeting solidified the strong partnership between Ghana and China, with both parties committed to working together to foster sustainable development and responsible exploitation of resources in the years to come.
