The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has clarified that their presence in Parliament on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, was strictly to perform security duties following a request from the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. In a press statement issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quarshie, GAF explained that the deployment was part of routine Canine and Bomb Sweeps, a standard procedure conducted on the first sitting day of the week, especially when Parliament convenes outside its traditional location.
The statement emphasized that GAF personnel were not there to interfere with parliamentary proceedings but to ensure the safety of the Grand Arena at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) by checking for explosive devices and harmful substances. GAF also expressed concern over misinformation circulating in the media, which suggested that the military was deployed to disrupt the session.
The military reiterated its commitment to public safety and urged media outlets to avoid spreading false information, encouraging responsible reporting on such matters. The deployment came after a formal request from Parliament, which was influenced by heightened tensions surrounding the Speaker’s recent ruling on the declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant, which has sparked public debate.
