Ghana Highway Authority workers declare indefinite strike

Construction on key road infrastructure and administrative projects across Ghana is set to face serious delays as workers of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) announced an indefinite strike starting Tuesday, November 12.

The strike stems from government’s refusal to suspend the National Roads Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1118), a new law that workers say was pushed through without sufficient input from key stakeholders in the sector.

Central to the workers’ grievances is a call for the removal of two prominent figures, Ing. I.K. Mensah, Chairman of the GHA Board, and Ing. Collins B. Donkor, Chief Executive Officer of the National Roads Authority (NRA). Workers allege that these officials have been instrumental in advancing policies that undermine the effectiveness and integrity of the roads sector.

In an earlier petition addressed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, GHA employees had requested more comprehensive consultations on the implementation of the Act. With no response to their concerns, workers now say they feel compelled to strike as a last resort.
