Ghana Medical Association support Organised Labour but Declines Participation in Upcoming Strike

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has announced its decision to refrain from participating in the nationwide strike planned for October 10, despite expressing solidarity with Organised Labour in their fight against illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

In a press release issued on October 8, following an internal meeting, GMA clarified that it has not established a roadmap for industrial action. The statement, signed by GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour, emphasized that all members are expected to continue providing uninterrupted medical services.

While the GMA will not participate in the strike, it acknowledged the severe impact of galamsey on the environment and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians. The association recognizes the necessity of a collective effort to combat illegal mining but reiterated its commitment to maintaining medical services.

The Ghana Medical Association concluded the release by stating that the National Executive Council (NEC) would provide further updates to members if necessary, ensuring that they remain informed about any changes in the situation.

Organised Labour has insisted on proceeding with the strike to urge the government to take stronger measures against illegal mining, highlighting the growing concern over the issue.
