The Ghana National Gas Company Limited (GNGCL) has successfully saved more than $250 million in operational costs by relying entirely on Ghanaian engineers and technicians for the maintenance and operation of its gas processing plant.
Since April 2017, when Ghanaian engineers took over the plant’s operations from Sinopec, the Chinese contractor, the company has been saving an estimated $3 million each month. Dr. Ben K. D. Asante, CEO of Ghana Gas, shared these details during a news briefing in Accra on Sunday.
The company now employs approximately 1,000 permanent and contract Ghanaian staff, who manage key areas of the plant, including the control room and other operational units. Dr. Asante emphasized that this shift to local expertise was part of the broader effort to indigenize the plant’s operations, proving that Ghanaian professionals are more than capable when given the opportunity.
Since taking over the operations, Ghanaian engineers have successfully led three major plant shutdowns for maintenance, demonstrating their capability to handle such complex tasks. Additionally, the team has carried out essential maintenance activities, including pipeline pigging and integrity management, and achieved ISO 45001 certification for occupational health, environmental, and safety management systems. Dr. Asante noted that the plant has maintained a stellar safety record with “no loss-time injuries.”
Regarding corporate social responsibility, Dr. Asante highlighted that Ghana Gas has completed over 400 projects across the country in sectors such as healthcare, education, water, sanitation, and sports. Currently, more than 80 CSR projects are ongoing.
The GNGCL also plays a crucial role in Ghana’s energy sector, supplying about 80% of the natural gas used for thermal power generation. Additionally, the company provides 6% of the lean gas and condensate used for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), covering 50% of the country’s domestic LPG needs.
Founded in July 2011, the Ghana National Gas Company is responsible for building, operating, and owning the infrastructure necessary for gathering, processing, transporting, and marketing gas and its derivatives in Ghana. Through its strategic focus on local talent and community engagement, GNGCL continues to play a vital role in Ghana’s energy sector and economic development.
