Ghana’s ranking on the Global Peace Index (GPI) has seen a notable decline in 2024, reflecting a decrease in the nation’s level of peace. Ghana now holds the 55th position, slipping from 51st in 2023 and significantly lower from its 40th place in 2022.
Sub-Saharan Africa Context
Once the second most peaceful country in Sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana has now dropped to fourth place, trailing behind Mauritius, Madagascar, and Botswana. Meanwhile, the least peaceful nations in the region remain Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan. The report highlights the ongoing crisis in South Sudan, which has adversely affected both peace and the economy of the country.
Global Peace Index Overview
The Global Peace Index (GPI), produced annually by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), is now in its 18th edition. The GPI assesses the peacefulness of 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the global population.
How GPI Evaluates Peace
Peacefulness in countries is measured using three primary dimensions: Societal Safety and Security, Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, and Militarization. These categories are further analyzed through 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators to provide a comprehensive assessment of peace.
