Anthony Gordon’s second-half penalty salvaged a draw for Newcastle United as Manchester City were held at St James’ Park. The visitors initially took the lead after 35 minutes when defender Josko Gvardiol smartly converted from Jack Grealish’s lay-off.
City appeared to be coping well without key midfielder Rodri, sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury, as Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis stepped up in midfield. However, Newcastle turned the game in their favor shortly after the break.
Bruno Guimaraes produced a superb through ball that caught Kyle Walker playing Gordon onside. The England forward was brought down by City goalkeeper Ederson, who received a yellow card for his challenge. Gordon kept his nerve and confidently slotted the penalty past Ederson, sending him the wrong way to level the score.
City could have extended their lead before halftime, but Ilkay Gundogan failed to capitalize on a mistake by Newcastle keeper Nick Pope, who had sent a clearance straight to City while he was far out of his goal. Gundogan’s attempted chip went astray, missing a golden opportunity.
Both sides pressed for a winner in the closing stages, with Newcastle substitute Sean Longstaff coming close for the home team and City’s Bernardo Silva testing Pope deep into stoppage time.
Despite the draw, Newcastle still struggles against City, with just one win in 34 Premier League meetings. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola’s side has now dropped four points in the space of a week, following their perfect start to the season.
