President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to making governance more open, accountable, and responsive to the needs of its citizens. His statement was delivered by Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum at the global conference for the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) held in Accra on Tuesday, October 1.
The President highlighted Ghana’s progress in enhancing access to information, particularly through the implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which was passed in 2019. He underscored the importance of political will in realizing this fundamental right, noting that “a well-informed public is crucial for holding leaders accountable and ensuring meaningful participation in governance.”
Tawfik Jelassi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information at UNESCO, also recognized Africa’s advancements in the right to information. He praised Ghana for the successful passage and implementation of the RTI law, describing it as a standout achievement and a model for the continent.
Jelassi attributed this success to the law’s effectiveness in ensuring citizens have access to public information and promoting transparency and accountability in governance. Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, emphasized the role of technology in improving public access to government data, highlighting initiatives such as the GhanaToday.gov.gh platform and the forthcoming Online Records Management System (ORMS), which will digitize the RTI application process
