France’s Griezmann retires from internationals

Atletico Madrid star and World Cup champion Antoine Griezmann has officially announced his retirement from international football. The French forward shared the news in a heartfelt video posted on his social media on Monday, saying it was “time to turn the page and allow the next generation to take over.”

Griezmann’s final appearance for France came in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, where Didier Deschamps’ team fell to Spain, the eventual tournament winners. The 33-year-old, who made his debut for Les Bleus in March 2014, earned 137 caps and scored 44 goals during his decade-long international career.

The highlight of Griezmann’s time with France was undoubtedly their 2018 World Cup victory in Russia, marking France’s first World Cup win since 1998. In his farewell message, Griezmann reflected on his international journey with mixed emotions.

“Today, with a heavy heart, I announce my retirement from the French national team,” Griezmann said in the video. “For 10 years, I’ve faced challenges, celebrated successes, and shared unforgettable moments. But now, it’s time to make room for the new generation.”

Griezmann made a significant impact early on, particularly at Euro 2016 when France hosted the tournament. Playing as a striker, he won the Golden Boot by scoring six goals. However, the tournament ended in heartbreak as France lost the final 1-0 to Portugal in extra time.

Two years later, redemption came at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Griezmann played a pivotal role in helping France win their second-ever World Cup title, contributing either a goal or an assist in every knockout match. In the final, he scored a penalty and set up two other goals as France triumphed 4-2 over Croatia.

In his later years with the national team, Griezmann transitioned into a deeper midfield role, allowing Kylian Mbappe to take on the main attacking responsibilities. His performances at the 2022 World Cup were vital in helping France reach consecutive finals, although they were ultimately defeated by Argentina in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

With 137 caps, Griezmann is the third most-capped player in France’s history, behind only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram. He also ranks fourth on the country’s all-time goalscorers list. His retirement marks the end of an era for one of France’s most decorated and influential players.
