Pep Guardiola experienced his first-ever four-game losing streak as Manchester City manager after Brighton staged a comeback to defeat the reigning Premier League champions.
This rare run of four consecutive losses, City’s first since 2006, initially seemed unlikely as Erling Haaland put City in front after 23 minutes. Haaland struck on his second attempt, converting Mateo Kovacic’s pass to give City an early lead at the Amex Stadium.
Despite City’s promising start, Brighton regrouped and dominated the second half. Their pressure paid off when substitute Joao Pedro capitalized on a defensive scramble to equalize with 12 minutes remaining. Just five minutes later, Matt O’Riley, recently back from injury following his transfer from Celtic, broke through City’s defense to score past Ederson, completing Brighton’s turnaround.
Brighton’s victory was well-earned, having missed several prior opportunities, including a close-range header from Jack Hinshelwood and a missed chance by Georginio Rutter. The Seagulls’ relentless attack ultimately exposed City’s defensive vulnerabilities, securing a memorable win.
