Actress and philanthropist Habiba Sinare, formerly married to Black Stars striker Majeed Waris, has opened up about the struggles in their marriage that eventually led to their divorce. In a recent interview, Habiba candidly discussed the challenges she faced as the wife of a footballer, explaining that the glamorous image associated with such a union often hides the reality of marital difficulties.
Habiba revealed that one of the key reasons for their separation was Waris’ strong attachment to his family, which she felt created a distance between them. She explained that Waris often involved his parents in their private matters, which hindered the intimacy they should have shared as a couple.
“When we’re out together, he would still call and talk to his family. I didn’t understand why we couldn’t share something intimate without always involving his parents,” Habiba shared during an appearance on ‘Just Us’ with Mz Gee. “As a woman, I never brought my family into our personal issues, so it was difficult for me to accept that he always involved his.”
Habiba also expressed that she kept her marital struggles to herself for a long time, even hiding the situation from her own mother until much later. “I’m the type of person who keeps things to myself. My mum didn’t even know what I was going through until we had a family meeting,” she said.
The turning point came when Habiba decided to leave the marriage after a particularly painful moment. According to her, Waris made it clear that he wouldn’t choose her over his family. “When he said that, it hurt deeply. I realized I wasn’t truly considered family. Sometimes when people are angry, they say things they don’t mean, but words have power, and I take them seriously,” she reflected.
Habiba further shed light on the unique challenges of being married to a professional footballer, emphasizing the lack of time together and the emotional independence required to cope with their demanding lifestyle. “Marrying a footballer is not easy. You have to find ways to make yourself happy—either by traveling or coming back home to Ghana to enjoy yourself,” she said, offering advice to women who might consider similar relationships.
Habiba and Majeed Waris were married in 2017 but parted ways just 16 months later. Despite the difficulties, she has continued to build a successful career in acting and philanthropy.
