‘Bill Gates of Africa’ Herman Chinery-Hesse is laid to rest

Prominent Ghanaian technology entrepreneur Herman Kojo Chinery-Hesse, founder of theSOFTtribe, was laid to rest on November 2, following his passing on September 16 due to a cardiac arrest.

Chinery-Hesse, who was born on November 18, 1963, in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, is remembered as one of Africa’s pioneering figures in the tech industry. A funeral brochure revealed his illustrious background: he hailed from a distinguished Ghanaian family known for public service. His father, Lebrecht James Chinery-Hesse, was a notable legal draftsman, while his mother, Mary Akuokor Chinery-Hesse (née Blay), made history as the first woman to rise to the rank of Under Secretary General at the United Nations.

Raised in Ghana, Herman spent his formative years in Jamestown, cultivating a strong connection to his cultural roots. His educational journey began at Ridge Church School before he advanced to Mfantsipim School, where he laid the groundwork for his future in technology and entrepreneurship. In 1982, he moved to the United States, attending Westlake High School in Texas, and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Texas State University. This experience broadened his perspective on the transformative potential of technology for economic development.

After a year in the UK, Herman made the pivotal decision to return to Ghana, driven by a vision to leverage technology for the advancement of African businesses. His contributions to the tech landscape have left a lasting legacy, influencing many in the industry.
