Dr. George Akufo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has assured Ghanaians that comprehensive security measures are in place ahead of the December 7 general election. The IGP made the statement during a meeting with the Civil Forum Initiative (CFI) in Accra on Tuesday, where he reiterated the commitment of the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with other security agencies, to maintain peace during the election.
Dr. Dampare emphasized that any attempt to disrupt the nation’s peace would be met with swift and severe action. “We will not tolerate any individual or group that seeks to undermine the peace of the nation,” he said, adding that a detailed security strategy has been developed to ensure a smooth electoral process.
The Ghana Police Service has been in discussions with the Civil Forum Initiative to ensure adequate preparation for the upcoming election. Dr. Dampare highlighted that the police will take immediate action against anyone involved in election-related crimes. “Those who engage in illegal activities during the elections will be tracked down and brought to justice,” he warned.
Additionally, the IGP called on the public to support efforts for a peaceful election, urging citizens to cooperate fully with the security forces. He noted that in past elections, violence often occurred at collation centers, and as such, security at these locations will be heightened. Dr. Dampare stated that only authorized individuals will be permitted access to the collation centers this year, with similar security measures in place at the Electoral Commission (EC) offices where the presidential results will be finalized.
Dr. Dampare also addressed concerns over political parties potentially inciting violence following unfavorable results, assuring the public that such actions would not be tolerated. “We are committed to ensuring that the peace of the nation is upheld, regardless of the outcome,” he said.
Rev. Fr. Michael Quaicoe, Director of Governance, Justice, and Peace at the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference and an executive member of the Civil Forum Initiative, expressed support for the police’s strategic approach, commending their efforts to safeguard the election process.
