The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSG) is expressing serious concerns about the detrimental effects of illegal mining on drug manufacturing in the country. During the Society’s Annual General Meeting, President Samuel Kow Donkoh highlighted that contamination of water sources from galamsey activities could necessitate the importation of water for pharmaceutical production, as high-quality water is essential for manufacturing essential drugs.
Donkoh emphasized that the ongoing contamination poses a significant threat to local pharmaceutical production. In response, Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, Presidential Advisor on Health, announced that steps are being taken to mitigate illegal mining activities to improve local production capabilities.
Additionally, the PSG voiced deep concern regarding the shortage of pharmacists in the public sector, attributing this issue to the government’s freeze on recruitment. Barimah Sarfo Tweneboah Koduah, representing the Asantehene, urged the government to address the financial needs of pharmacists to ensure a robust healthcare workforce.
