The Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced its decision to initiate an indefinite strike beginning Monday, October 21, 2024. This move follows unsuccessful negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on September 24 and 25 regarding the request for Institution-Specific Allowances for PSWU member organizations.
In a press statement issued on October 14, 2024, the PSWU underscored the validity of its request for these allowances, which it deems essential for compensating member organizations under the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP). The union’s frustrations over unmet demands have led to the decision to strike.
The union also pointed out the ongoing erosion of the real value of their wages, the government’s failure to complete the review of the SSPP, and the discriminatory salary administration practices currently in place. As a result, the union has resolved to take industrial action to “secure our survival as workers.”
Initially, on September 27, the union had postponed its planned industrial action to facilitate discussions with relevant stakeholders. However, despite these efforts, no consensus has been achieved.
Faced with the lack of resolution, the union has no choice but to move forward with the Indefinite Strike, warning that if their concerns remain unaddressed, PSWU members on the Single Spine will activate industrial action effective October 21, 2024.
