Awal Mohammed, an independent parliamentary candidate for the Madina constituency, has been discharged by the Adentan Circuit Court after the police withdrew the case against him. The case stemmed from allegations that Mohammed had featured himself alongside former President John Mahama on campaign posters.
The complaint was filed by Abdul Razak Hussein, the Madina constituency secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Mohammed faced charges of offensive conduct likely to breach the peace, but he pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the court, which was presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam.
According to Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, the prosecutor, Hussein and Mohammed are both residents of the Madina constituency. Mohammed, a former NDC member, decided to run as an independent candidate after submitting his nomination to the Electoral Commission. The issue arose when Hussein received numerous complaints from NDC members, particularly the youth, regarding posters that allegedly featured Mohammed alongside the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Mahama.
The prosecution claimed that these posters, displayed in prominent locations across the constituency, caused concern among NDC members, who feared the materials could cause unrest and confusion.
In response to the complaint, the police invited Mohammed to give a caution statement. While he denied any involvement in putting up the posters, he did admit to referencing John Mahama’s name during his campaign speeches.
Following the police’s decision to withdraw the case, the court discharged Mohammed, bringing an end to the legal proceedings.
