Under the pretence of enforcing a recently imposed prohibition on grain exports, the minority has accused the government of using military personnel to intimidate voters. This charge is made in the wake of a catastrophic drought that has hit the country’s northern areas.
The administration declared an emergency restriction on grain exports on Monday, August 26. At the nation’s borders, military soldiers have been stationed to implement the prohibition, according to Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul. The minority, however, has voiced doubts about the government’s actual motivations and claimed that the deployment is an attempt to stifle voting.
At a press conference in Accra on Friday, James Agalga, the ranking member of the Defence and Interior Committee, stated: “If they have no hidden agendas, then they should have provided us with timelines.” The lack of timetables makes us believe that the military was merely called in to scare voters during the crisis, which was sparked by the northern drought and the possibility that we might face food security issues.
