President Akufo-Addo encourages Chinese investors to join Ghana’s economic transformation

On September 7, 2024, in Shenzhen, China, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo presented a strong argument for increasing Chinese investment in Ghana at the China-Ghana Business Forum.  The President stressed the historical linkages between Ghana and China, as well as the substantial investment prospects in industries ranging from manufacturing to agriculture and green energy, while speaking to a group of influential businesspeople in China.

He emphasised Ghana’s resolve to grow closer to China’s business community in order to promote mutual prosperity and learn from China’s success. He emphasised the strong commercial ties between Ghana and China, pointing out that as of 2023, bilateral commerce between the two countries would have reached $9.23 billion. China has been Ghana’s biggest trading partner since 2015. He praised Chinese businesses for their investments in vital industries including ICT, energy, agriculture, and construction. He attributed Ghana’s stability, security, and favourable investment climate to China’s expanding influence in the country.

In light of international issues like the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the President emphasised how these developments revealed structural flaws throughout Africa. He urged the corporate community to work with Ghana to build diverse, climate-aware, and resilient economies that can endure shocks to the world in the future. He asserts that creating economies that prosper in spite of global upheavals will require international cooperation.

He mentioned how the GDP of Ghana expanded at an average yearly rate of 7% between 2017 and 2020. Notwithstanding the pandemic’s losses and geopolitical obstacles, the president voiced hope for Ghana’s revival of robust economic growth.

President Akufo-Addo concluded by reiterating that Ghana is a great place for Chinese investment because it has an abundance of natural resources, a stable regulatory framework, and advantageous fiscal policies. He called on Chinese investors to take advantage of the opportunity, highlighting that Ghana is open to serious partnerships and that its markets are prepared. The President, filled with hope for the future and a renewed commitment to building strong ties between Ghana and China, noted that greater cooperation will lead to shared prosperity for both countries.
