John Abdulai Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusawgu, voiced concern over perceived political leanings within the Supreme Court, particularly regarding recent rulings. Speaking on Key Points on Saturday, October 26, Jinapor highlighted public perceptions that the Supreme Court, and notably the Chief Justice, may be influenced by political interests.
His comments followed a Supreme Court ruling that suspended Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant, pending further deliberation. The decision allows Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadwo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah Amoako (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central) to retain their seats temporarily.
Jinapor argued that the judiciary should not interfere with parliamentary decisions, stating, “The Supreme Court cannot direct Parliament what to do. We are masters of our own rules.” This intervention, he suggested, risks further politicizing the judiciary’s role in legislative matters.
