Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has vehemently condemned the violent treatment of journalists, stating that such attacks are fundamentally assaults on democracy.
Speaking at the 28th GJA Awards and the 75th Anniversary celebration in Accra on Saturday, September 28, Dwumfour urged politicians to refrain from targeting journalists in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
He encouraged Ghanaians to voice their concerns through the proper channels, noting that incidents of media brutality have decreased thanks to measures like blacklisting certain high-profile individuals and politicians.
However, Dwumfour expressed alarm over ongoing issues such as physical assaults, verbal abuse, cyberbullying, and harassment that hinder journalists’ ability to conduct investigative reporting.
“Politicians must stop attacking media houses and journalists performing their duties,” he stated, highlighting that Ghana’s ranking on the World Press Freedom Index has suffered due to these attacks from prominent figures and political parties.
