The Ghana Mine Workers Union (GMWU) is planning a protest outside the Jubilee House on Monday, September 16, demanding that the government cancel Future Global Resources’ mining lease. GMWU General Secretary Abdul Moomin Gbana announced on September 5 that the union will take further action to ensure the cancellation of the contract.
Earlier this year, in April, the GMWU organized a protest at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, urging for the same outcome. The Minister, Abu Jinapor, had given Future Global Resources 120 days to secure funds to pay workers’ overdue salaries and benefits.
As this deadline has passed without the lease being revoked, the GMWU is frustrated and has decided to picket the Jubilee House. The General Secretary made it clear that the union is firm in its stance.
