Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has unveiled a revised edition of the “Manual on Election Adjudication in Ghana,” aimed at guiding the resolution of electoral disputes. This fifth edition, produced by the Judicial Service, builds on a tradition established in 2008, offering a comprehensive resource on electoral laws, procedures, and case precedents.
The new manual consists of three volumes, each addressing specific aspects of election adjudication. Notably, it incorporates proposals from civil society organizations, the Electoral Commission, and other stakeholders aimed at streamlining the handling of parliamentary election disputes.
At the launch, attended by officials from the Electoral Commission, diplomats, civil society representatives, and judges, Justice Torkornoo emphasized the manual’s role in promoting transparency and fairness in the electoral process. She urged widespread usage of the manual, which will also be available for free online, to prevent misunderstandings and strengthen democracy.
Justice Torkornoo acknowledged her predecessors for their contributions to the manual’s development and highlighted the need for all citizens to protect democratic principles, especially in light of recent challenges faced by the judiciary. Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, chair of the Election Management Committee, noted that extensive stakeholder engagement informed the revisions, particularly regarding the expeditious resolution of electoral disputes.
