Personnel from the Ghana Police Service have taken over Keta in the Volta region as residents embark on a mammoth demonstration against the alleged police brutality that led to the death of a landlord, Jerry Kpesenu Maya.
The body of Mr. Kpesenu formerly of media practicing in keta was reported to have died mid this year in June precisely in 2024, while in police detention custody where he was allegedly severely assaulted. His arrest was as a result of a report by an electrician who claimed to have gone to his house for the purpose of installing an air conditioner for a tenant where Jerry had allegedly reacted vigorously against the exercise.
It is said that Jerry had a quarrel with some officers while in custody presumed to be from the Keta Municipal Police Command. Said altercation was said to have precipitated the sad event that caused a lot of furore in the family and the general public among his kin and relations.
People have occupied the streets with an intention to get justice for the unfortunate events that led to Jerry’s death. According to the evidence, which was retrieved from various eyewitnesses, the police officers involved in the operations used threats, abuse, and physical violence by targets of the rifles using the electric cables.
