Couple accuses Korle-Bu, Akawe Hospital of allegedly stealing their triplets

A couple residing in Mallam Kokroko, within the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, has accused healthcare workers from the Akawe Government Hospital and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital of allegedly stealing their newborn triplets.

Hilda Ninson, the mother of the babies, revealed that she gave birth to the preterm triplets at Akawe Government Hospital on August 3, 2024. However, due to the hospital’s shortage of incubators, a nurse identified as Auntie Mercy arranged for the babies to be transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital the following day.

Hilda claims that shortly after their arrival at Korle-Bu, her husband, Patrick Gyasi, was sent to buy medication. During his absence, hospital staff reportedly informed him that one of the triplets had passed away. Upon returning, Patrick expressed concern that the body he was shown did not resemble the other two surviving babies.

Later, while he was sent again to purchase additional medication, the couple was informed that their second baby had also died. On August 5, 2024, the family received a devastating call from Korle-Bu’s NICU, stating that their third triplet had also died.

Hilda is convinced that the medical staff at Korle-Bu stole her babies. She recounted an earlier conversation with a Social Welfare worker at Akawe Hospital who suggested she should give one of the babies away. Additionally, Patrick claimed he overheard Auntie Mercy discussing plans to sell the babies, citing the couple’s financial struggles.

Patrick is demanding justice, asserting that the bodies shown to him appeared to be much older than his newborn triplets.

When contacted by Adom News, Akawe Government Hospital officials confirmed Hilda had delivered the babies at their facility and that they were referred to Korle-Bu due to the lack of incubators. However, they stated that they were unaware of what occurred after the transfer.

Dr. David Kwabena Okoh, the Medical Director at Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital, also verified the referral but declined to comment on the events at Korle-Bu.

The couple is calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of their triplets, suspecting foul play. Adom News is actively seeking a response from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital management regarding the allegations.
