The chief executive officer of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, has flatly refuted allegations that the facility’s sole cancer treatment machine recently broke down, trapping patients. In response to these allegations, Dr. Ampomah explained that the hospital possesses many cancer treatment equipment rather than just one, and that just one of them had a brief malfunction. He called the reports a “misrepresentation” in an interview, stressing that KBTH has other machines to assist patients.
Dr. Ampomah clarified that although the malfunctioning machine was the most sophisticated and easy to operate, it was fixed in a matter of days. In response to rumors that patients were turned away on Thursday, July 4, 2024, while oncologists worked to fix the equipment, he reassured the public that patients’ treatments were not materially interrupted.
“That one is also a misrepresentation. We have a number of machines there. It’s like you have a Rolls Royce and a Toyota, you are using both. The Rolls Royce is used when you want to go and flex, so the Toyota is reliable, it always works. So, Toyota has been working, and there’s no issue with the Toyota” he explained.
While acknowledging that the machine’s breakdowns usually cause disruptions to the treatment process, he made it clear that patients are not always deprived of their scheduled sessions. Rather, he said, different plans are put in place to guarantee care continuity.
