Matchday 12 in the 2024-25 La Liga season highlights the highly anticipated ‘Derby Barceloni’ as FC Barcelona takes on RCD Espanyol at the Lluis Company’s Olympic Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Barcelona aims to continue their impressive start to the campaign, while Espanyol seeks a vital victory to distance themselves from the relegation zone.
The derby also marks a special reunion for friends Dani Olmo of Barcelona and Javi Puado of Espanyol, who previously played together in Barcelona’s youth academy and on the Spanish Olympic team that clinched a silver medal at Tokyo 2020. Puado expressed excitement for the match, stating, “We have been roommates and gone on holiday together. We are good friends. I am sure we will see each other a lot this year, but on derby day… it’s knife between the teeth [laughs]. I am happy for him; I know he was looking forward to returning home.”
Valencia has struggled in the early stages of the season and is in dire need of a strong performance against the powerful Madrid side to kickstart their campaign. Valencia forward Diego Lopez emphasized the importance of effort and determination, saying, “People want us to leave everything on the pitch—to run, to fight, and to realize what team we are representing. I have no doubt that this way we will get victories.”
The matchday kicks off on Friday night with Deportivo Alaves taking on Mallorca in the Basque Country. On Sunday, Atletico Madrid will host Las Palmas at the Metropolitano Stadium, while the round concludes on Monday evening with a clash between Celta Vigo and Getafe at the Abanca-Balaidos Stadium.
