Gov’t to launch 5G services today

Today, November 1, 2024, the government will officially launch 5G high-speed internet service at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra. President Akufo-Addo is expected to lead the event, unveiling the next generation of internet connectivity, designed to significantly enhance speed and reliability across Ghana.

Known as the Fifth Generation of Wireless Technology, 5G offers numerous benefits over its predecessors, including faster internet speeds, quicker upload and download times, stronger and more consistent connections, and a much larger capacity for handling data traffic.

5G networks still use the same radio frequencies as previous generations—3G, 4G, and 4G LTE—that power most mobile devices worldwide. However, with its enhanced speed, reduced latency, and improved bandwidth, 5G outperforms 4G technology by delivering up to ten times the speed of 4G Plus, providing a stronger, more reliable internet experience.

Government on 5G Rollout

At a previous media briefing, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, announced that the government has collaborated with seven industry partners to build shared infrastructure for delivering 5G services in Ghana. This partnership is aimed at making high-speed mobile broadband both accessible and affordable across the country.

Speaking at a Meet-the-Press session earlier this year, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful emphasized that 5G technology would offer Ghanaians faster data speeds, lower latency, and enhanced connectivity. She highlighted that these advancements would facilitate easier access to digital services such as healthcare, education, and financial resources, ensuring more efficient and impactful experiences for users nationwide.

5G Service Provision and Consortium of Companies

The government has granted the 5G license to The Next Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a newly formed shared infrastructure company co-promoted by the government and a consortium of seven companies. This initiative aims to make 5G mobile broadband services more affordable and accessible throughout Ghana.

The companies partnering with NGIC in this effort include Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana. The shared infrastructure is expected to drive down costs and enhance connectivity, supporting the country’s digital transformation.
