UG Student Files Lawsuit Challenging SRC Elections As Hiplife Artist Guru Re-Enters Presidential Race

Asioh Joseph Mawuli, a second-year Bachelor of Arts student at the University of Ghana (UG), has taken legal action against the university’s administration over the Student Representative Council (SRC) elections. The lawsuit follows the re-admission of popular hiplife musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, also known as Guru NKZ, into the UGSRC presidential contest after he was initially disqualified by the Electoral Commission.

Guru’s disqualification was due to his non-resident status, which violates Article 30 of the SRC constitution, requiring candidates to be campus residents and eligible to contest for a Junior Common Room (JCR) position. Mawuli’s court filing seeks to affirm that the disqualification of Guru and another candidate, Emmanuel Owusu Amponsah, was lawful under Article 30(1)(a).

Mawuli further argues that an email from Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, sent through Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, amounted to interference with the Electoral Commission and Judicial Board’s autonomy.
