The Ghanaian government has expressed serious concerns over the escalating crisis in Lebanon, where ongoing Israeli airstrikes have displaced over one million people, including a recent incident in central Beirut that has raised fears of a full-scale invasion.
In light of the deteriorating situation, the government issued a statement on Friday, October 4, 2024, urging Ghanaian nationals in Lebanon to return home promptly via available flights.
To facilitate their return, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has advised Ghanaians with incomplete documentation to contact the Embassy of Ghana in Cairo, Egypt, or the Honorary Consulate in Beirut. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of Ghanaian citizens amidst the growing instability in Lebanon.
The international community, including the United Nations, is closely monitoring the situation and working to provide humanitarian aid to those affected.
On Monday, September 23, Israel conducted a devastating barrage of airstrikes across Lebanon, marking the deadliest day for the country since the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, the powerful Iran-backed militant group. The intense bombing campaign has resulted in over 500 fatalities, including women and children, and has injured more than 1,800 others, according to authorities.
As residents fled their homes in search of safety, clashes between Israel and Hezbollah continued in southern Lebanon on Wednesday. Reports from the Israeli military, Hezbollah, and Lebanon’s army confirmed fighting in at least two areas near the border, particularly around closed military zones where Israel had amassed troops and equipment.
