Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo cruised to victory in the 100m at the Rome Diamond League meet on Friday, clocking an impressive 9.87 seconds. The 21-year-old entered the competition fresh off 200m victories in Lausanne and Silesia, facing a formidable lineup that included American stars Fred Kerley and Christian Coleman, as well as Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala.
Some of the other athletes who competed included 2020 Olympic gold medalist, and compatriot Marcell Jacobs, but it was Tebogo who was the showstopper. With 15 meters to go, Tebogo relaxed and instead of sprinting, he began dancing till the finish line while looking at Kerley and Coleman, the former world champions. Christian Coleman also placed second having run the race in 9. 95 seconds, and Fred Kerley came third with 9.
Tebogo now sets his sights on the Diamond League final that is scheduled for September 5 where he will be in a good position to end the season.
