Liverpool staged a thrilling comeback at Anfield to defeat Brighton and seize the top spot in the Premier League on a day when their title rivals faltered. Arsenal fell to Newcastle, and Manchester City suffered a surprising defeat to Bournemouth, setting the stage for Liverpool to capitalize.
However, things looked grim for Liverpool initially. Trailing 1-0 at halftime after Ferdi Kadioglu’s superb strike put Brighton ahead, it seemed Liverpool might miss their chance. Brighton played with confidence, dominating much of the first half and even silencing the Anfield crowd at times. Kadioglu’s powerful shot from 16 yards out, which hit the inside of the post on its way in, had given the visitors an early advantage and looked set to lift them to third in the table. Liverpool’s goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, had to be sharp to deny Georginio Rutter and prevent a bigger deficit.
The game took a dramatic turn in the second half. Cody Gakpo’s cross from the left flank sailed past everyone and into the net for Liverpool’s equalizer—his third goal against Brighton within four days after a brace in the Carabao Cup. Just three minutes later, Mohamed Salah sent Anfield into raptures, curling a sublime shot into the far corner from the edge of the box to complete the comeback.
The result underlines Liverpool’s strong start under new manager Arne Slot, as they claimed their 13th win in 15 matches, now sitting two points above Manchester City at the top of the league.
