James Maddison scored a brace as Tottenham delivered a stunning 4-0 victory over Manchester City, who have now suffered five consecutive defeats for the first time since 2006. Pedro Porro added a third, and Brennan Johnson sealed the win with a late fourth, as City’s 52-match unbeaten streak at the Etihad Stadium was brought to a shocking end. The last time City lost so heavily at home in the league was in 2003, when they were thrashed 5-1 by Arsenal.
The result also marked a rare setback for Pep Guardiola’s team, as it was the first time they’ve lost three straight Premier League matches under his management. Prior to this defeat, Guardiola had never suffered a home loss by more than three goals in his managerial career.
Tottenham’s remarkable performance came despite the absence of both starting central defenders and with five teenagers on the bench. They had lost their previous match 2-1 to Ipswich, but under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, they defied the odds to deliver an emphatic win.
Tottenham fans couldn’t resist taunting Guardiola, singing “you’ll be sacked in the morning” in celebration after Porro’s goal.
City’s lack of Rodri, absent due to injury, was glaring, especially as the midfielder had been the subject of a special pre-match tribute on his first visit back to the Etihad since winning the Ballon d’Or.
Despite this defeat, City remain in second place, but Liverpool could extend their lead to eight points with a win at Southampton on Sunday. Tottenham, meanwhile, climb to sixth, just four points behind their Manchester counterparts.
